Maritime Discovery Centre fishes for tourism treasure
Simon Fuller is passionate about restoring and constructing heritage buildings and sailing tall ships, so when an opportunity to combine the two interests presented itself, he jumped at it.
His vision for a revitalized waterfront in historic Brockville will come to life in the summer of 2012. That’s when his $70 million multi-faceted development is slated to be complete.
It’s an ambitious project that revolves around a Maritime Discovery Centre focused on the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. The Discovery Centre will feature hands-on permanent and traveling exhibits that look at the river’s history and environment, as well as an aquarium and a tall ships training centre.
Also included is an 18-storey mixed-use building that will house condominiums, a boutique hotel, shops and a restaurant, and a marina where the tall ship the Fair Jeanne will moor.
“It’s an exciting concept,” says Dave Paul, Director of Economic Development for the city of Brockville, “one we hope will draw thousands of new visitors again and again – and will spawn other attractions in the downtown core, including hotels, restaurants, entertainment and diving operations.”
