Savour Muskoka: Culinary Delights in a Canadiana Setting

Muskoka’s Culinary Tourism tradition began in the 1800s with the arrival of tourists by steamship and train for summers at area resorts and cottages.

Today, investors seeking opportunities in culinary experiences should seek out the members of SAVOUR Muskoka, formed to help visitors experience the uniqueness of Muskoka through local food and drink.

In December 2004, area “foodies” came together and created a plan to promote the Muskoka and Parry Sound region as a dynamic culinary tourism destination.

The price of waterfront cottages on Lake Joseph, Lake Muskoka or Lake Rosseau runs from $500,000 to $700,000, and these properties are a magnet for Hollywood stars, hockey players and those seeking some of the most luxurious cottages in Canada.

Today, visitors can choose from a wide variety of quality culinary events, trails, packages and experiences to explore Muskoka and Parry Sound. The SAVOUR Muskoka logo, highlighted at area farmers’ markets and retail locations, is also granted to member restaurants to highlight their signature items made with local products.

There are currently 22 restaurants participating in SAVOUR Muskoka, featuring culinary offerings by such renowned chefs as Tawfik Shehata, Cliff Sinnamon, and Randy Spencer. While methods may have evolved over the century, culinary and service teams in the region still continue the same tradition of promoting local products in their menu planning.

From hands on cooking classes with award-winning chefs featuring regional ingredients, to field trips with local farms and producers, the Muskoka culinary success story is available for new investors to join in the expansion.
